The 5 Phases of Custom Web Development

At Allison Royce & Associates, we take the custom Web development processes very seriously by adhering to a strict project methodology. We use a proven five-step process to manage all custom projects – large or small. Each step is crucial toward the successful delivery of a top quality Web project that will come in both on time and within budget.

We understand that change is inevitable in today's turbulent economy. We are prepared at each step of the process to address shifts in focus as they happen, and to communicate with you up-front the ramifications of any deviation from your original requests. Our applications are designed with flexibility in mind, so that we are capable of managing even the most challenging of obstacles. At Allison Royce, we will never build you into a box.

  • Phase 1 - Discovery
  • The discovery phase is where we come together to identify the online needs and goals of your organization. Our talented team of professionals will work closely with you to determine the exact specifications particular to your project, and to develop a step-by-step overview of the entire process portal-to-portal. Our artists and programmers devote the culmination of their combined experience and expertise to guarantee the most current and successful development practices will be incorporated. This phase is the foundation upon which all subsequent phases will be constructed. Typically, the discovery portion of a project could take up to approximately 20-30% of the total timeline. Discovery includes an initial design consultation and subsequent follow-up meetings in order to arrive at the following deliverables:

    • Scope of Work (establish production milestones)
    • Requirements Documentation (content collection)
    • Cost Estimates and Timelines
    • Definition of Roles and Responsibilities

  • Phase 2 – Design
  • The design phase is where we re-evaluate the requirements, make any necessary adjustments to the cost calculations and/or project timelines, and determine the ultimate site architecture and navigational scheme. This phase includes formulating solid plans for both usability and functionality. Graphic user interface design as well as any back-end programming and/or database integration issues are fully addressed during this phase to assure all interactive features are compatible and scalable. The design phase will render the following deliverables:

    • HTML prototype for customer review
    • Initial graphic design-cuts for client evaluation
    • Revised project requirements (cost estimates and timelines)

  • Phase 3 – Development
  • The development phase of the project is always the most anticipated phase, and of course the most critical also. It is important to be extremely thorough during the development phase, because this is traditionally when the majority of testing is performed for any software bugs or other abnormalities. At this time, all graphic art layout will be finalized, and any technical devices are run through a barrage of performance safeguards. Development should consume about 40-50% of the project timeline depending on the specific project requirements. The development phase will result in the following deliverables:

    • HTML prototype for customer review
    • Initial graphic design-cuts for client evaluation
    • Revised project requirements (cost estimates and timelines)

  • Phase 4 – Deployment
  • Deploying the project is very exciting, but it is not the final launch. In this phase, Allison Royce demonstrates the site and any accompanying applications on an internal staging server that is an exact duplicate of our production environment. The remainder of functionality testing is performed during this deployment phase. You will be given password access to view and test the site for final revisions before the actual launch of the data to the World Wide Web.. Deployment should consume 15% of the total project timeline. There is one deliverable in this phase:

    • Release Candidate I
    • Hosting options (shared, dedicated, managed)
    • Website delivered across our multi-homed and redundant networks, or over a quality broadband connection directly to your location

  • Phase 5 – Production
  • It's time to display your site to the world and go live with a full production. Upon completion of a successful deployment phase, Allison Royce is equipped to host your Website and insure that it is up and broadcasting around the world 24X7. (Talk in depth about hosting options here.) The following are deliverables in this phase:

    • Production Version 1 of your Web site
